As a second-generation Nigerian American Christian Woman, I offer a unique perspective shaped by my lived mental health experiences. I intimately understand the daily struggles faced by individuals of all races and ethnicities in acknowledging and addressing our mental health challenges amidst life's complexities.
My journey began in childhood, navigating the challenges of my identity as a U.S.-born Nigerian girl growing up in a Westernized country while immersed in an African household. This balancing act was compounded by the trials of school-based bullying and other personal adversities. Confronting these challenges, I bravely challenged the persistent whispers of negativity, fighting against beliefs that said "you are not good enough" and "no one cares about you." These experiences ignited a fire within me—a determination to persevere despite life's obstacles and to advocate for myself and others facing similar struggles.
Encouraged by my family and community, I pursued higher education to bridge gaps in culturally competent health professions. I earned a Bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration and later attained a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Health Education and Promotion. I am a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) accredited by National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, a Mental Health Coach accredited by The American Association of Christian Counselors, and a Peer Support Specialist. With these credentials, I emphasize the transformative power of education in driving positive change.
In addition to my academic achievements, I have presented to over 50 organizations/schools such as the University of California, San Diego, the University of California, Riverside, the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS). I have also facilitated 100+ mental health workshops, engaged in effective mental health promotion, and developed a robust online presence with motivational messages and podcasts. This hands-on experience complements my academic background, allowing me to connect with individuals on a personal level and provide meaningful support in their mental health journeys.
I am more than an advocate; I am a storyteller. I weave experiences into narratives of empowerment and resilience, following the example set by Jesus. Together, let's collaborate on crafting a story of positive change in mental health. Let's turn challenges into opportunities for growth.
